Established in 1958, the BAIC brand is one of the five largest vehicle manufacturers in China. in 2010, the Group completed an internal strategic reorganization and changed its name to Beijing Automotive Group Co., Ltd. which marked its transformation from traditional manufacturing to intelligent and high-end. BAIC Automotive has a number of modernized factories located in Beijing Shunyi, Zhuzhou and Guangzhou. Take the intelligent factory in Beijing Shunyi as an example, it is a benchmark factory for Industry 4.0. Inside the factory is a 5G fully-connected workshop that realizes 100% equipment interoperability; it also features an AI vision inspection system that can quickly identify defects in parts and vehicles with an accuracy rate of 99.99%; and a digital twin technology inside the factory that can shorten the virtual debugging cycle of vehicles by 60%.In addition, each factory generally adopts automated production lines for stamping, welding, painting and general assembly, which fully realizes lean manufacturing and flexible production in the factories. In order to better serve the overseas market, BAIC brand has invested and built localized production plants in many countries. For example, BAIC has built a vehicle assembly plant with a local partner in South Africa (Port Elizabeth Plant, South Africa), which is mainly aimed at the southern African market. BAIC has built a plant in Rayong, Thailand, which is an important manufacturing base in Southeast Asia, and the plant has a perfect four major processes of vehicle production, which can support the production of right-hand drive models, and the vehicles produced in the plant radiate the entire ASEAN market. BAIC has also established a factory in Tehran in cooperation with Iranian company Khodro to realize localized production and greatly reduce the impact of local logistics costs. The establishment of these domestic and overseas factories has greatly enhanced BAIC’s global delivery capability.
In terms of R&D, BAIC has set up a national-level technology center in Beijing, and has formed a team of senior engineers and scientific research talents, which is dedicated to technological innovations in the fields of vehicle powertrain, intelligent Internet connection and application of new materials. In addition to Beijing, BAIC has also set up sub-centers in Shanghai and Shenzhen to strengthen its R&D in vehicle big data and autonomous driving. Overseas, BAIC Automotive has set up a European R&D center in Munich, Germany, which is mainly responsible for the development of vehicle platforms and forward-looking technologies; and the Intelligent Internet of Things Laboratory in Silicon Valley is mainly responsible for the development of its intelligent cockpit based on the Hongmeng system, the L3-level self-driving function, and so on. BJ40 PLUS is BAIC’s classic hardcore off-road SUV, which continues BAIC’s familial square-box styling, with a five-hole grille at the front, paired with thick chrome trim to show a sense of power.
