GAC Pure Electric Vehicle: Defining new global mobility norms with pure electric technology

GAC is the abbreviation of Guangzhou Automobile Group Co. In 1996, Guangzhou Municipality made a strategic adjustment according to the situation of the automobile industry at that time, and also opened the road to a major turnaround in the development of Guangzhou’s automobile industry. 1997 saw the establishment of Guangzhou Automobile Group Co. It is one of the most important representatives of China’s automobile industry. After 28 years of development, GAC has grown from a regional automobile group to a global top 500 enterprise, and in 2017, GAC Group released the strategic development concept of “electrification, intelligence, and Internet connectivity”, which formally opened its pace of transition to new energy. At the same time, GAC has built a full-value ecological chain from R&D to manufacturing to service in the field of pure electric EV models. From the early days of its establishment to the top 500 companies nowadays, GAC has interpreted the power of “Made in China” with its strength.

GAC Motors has a globalized manufacturing base covering China, Southeast Asia and Europe. The production bases in China include Guangzhou Plant and Changsha Plant. GAC’s Guangzhou plant is the world’s first lighthouse plant for new energy vehicles. The workshop uses over 500+ robots for automated welding, realizing 100% automated operation; when the painting workshop is in operation, the level of VOC emission per unit of product has been reduced by 40% compared to the industry; the assembly plant adopts the combination of “forced assembly line and flexible assembly island”, which enables the plant to realize the common production of multiple platforms and models. The digital twin technology used in the factory can react to the physical state of the production line in real time, and through AI algorithms to predict whether equipment failures will occur in the workshop and respond to the strategy in advance, which also makes it possible to control the defective rate of parts in the workshop to less than 0.05%, and the CPK value of the key processes in production is greater than or equal to 1.67. The factory is also equipped with a quality traceability system, where each vehicle has an exclusive and unique electronic file that generates 1,200+ pieces of data throughout the vehicle’s production process, which can be recorded in a full range of records to support the vehicle’s lifecycle traceability. GAC’s production bases in Southeast Asia include the Rayong plant in Thailand and the Jakarta plant in Indonesia. The Indonesia plant adopts the production model of “small scale, fast output, rolling development”, with an initial production capacity of 20,000 units, which can be increased to 50,000 units at a later stage. Currently, GAC Motors is also actively negotiating with the governments of Spain and Italy to prepare for the establishment of a European plant.

GAC has a number of design and development centers around the world, gathering professional and technical talents from all over the world, including: the Milan Foresight Design Center, which focuses on the future mobility aesthetics of the vehicle and leads the design of related concept models; the Los Angeles Design Center, which focuses on the research and development of models for the North American market; the Shanghai Design Center, which is mainly responsible for the design of the intelligent cockpit and the interaction design of vehicles; and the Guangzhou Research Institute, which has an international team of more than 5,000 people, mainly coordinates the full-stack technology development. So far, GAC has invested more than 40 billion RMB in R&D and holds more than 8,600 new energy patents.

Technical highlights of GAC Automotive’s pure electric models include:

  1. Battery safety system: GAC’s battery system is the first system in the world to be tested with a gunshot test, and it adopts the triple protection design of “ultra-strong shell, intelligent temperature control, and high-speed pressure relief”. The shell of the car battery is made of 1500MPa ultra-high-strength steel, and the overall stamping capacity can be increased by 30%. Inside the battery, nano-scale aerogel insulation is used to ensure that the thermal runaway of the electric cell does not spread. In addition, GAC’s fifth-generation BMS battery management system is capable of monitoring more than 500 data parameters in real time while the vehicle is running, with a prediction accuracy of 99.99%. This technology has been applied to a number of GAC’s pure electric vehicle models, with a cumulative total of 8 billion kilometers of zero spontaneous combustion results, raising the safety standards of the entire battery industry.
  2. Vehicle electric drive and platform advantages: GAC pure electric vehicles generally adopt the Quark electric drive, whose motor power density reaches 12kW/kg, 50% higher than the industry average, and the overall operating efficiency of the system exceeds 92.5%, greatly reducing energy loss. Its torque output value reaches 4,000N-m, and the Hyper SSR, equipped with this electric drive, has achieved the record of breaking 100 in 1.9 seconds.GAC adopts the world’s first all-aluminum, all-electric vehicle architecture platform, AEP3.0, whose low-center-of-gravity design improves the stability of the vehicle’s handling, the combination of the front double-wishbone and rear five-link suspension realizes precise steering and vibration filtration, and the intelligent four-wheel-drive system supports dynamic distribution of torque between the front and rear axles of the vehicle.
  3. Intelligent cockpit configuration: GAC pure electric models are equipped with the ADIGO SPACE system based on the Qualcomm 8295 chip, which supports split-screen interaction and gesture control of the car’s triple screen, the system comes with a voice assistant that can realize millisecond-level response, and the AR-HUD head-up display that can project key information such as the navigation situation and the speed of the car directly.

The GAC Hyper GT is a purely electric coupe with active closed air intakes on the front of the vehicle and a wind resistance of only 0.197Cd, which can be ranked in the top three positions of production models worldwide. Side of the rotary door design supports 70 ° of electric opening function, the door has a radar installed, with the opening of the obstacle avoidance function, while the side of the frameless door and hidden door handle design, adding a sense of science and technology of the entire body. The rear of the vehicle is equipped with an electric rear wing, which automatically rises when the vehicle travels at speeds above 80km/h, providing 60kg of downforce, and the ultra-thin 3D three-dimensional light strips at the rear support a heartbeat-type welcoming effect. The interior of the AC GT Electric is equipped with a three-body screen layout design (14.6-inch suspended center console plus 8.8-inch full LCD gauges and a 10.2-inch entertainment screen on the passenger side), and the vehicle’s star knob is made of crystal and integrates a casual switching mode for driving. The car is equipped with a 3-speaker Belgian Premium audio with a power of 1,440W, which supports Dolby Atmos in the car, and an intelligent scent system with five scent types to choose from, as well as support for intelligent voice-adjustment of the concentration.The GAC Hyper GT is divided into two types of rear-wheel-drive and four-wheel-drive, with the rear-wheel-drive version having an acceleration of zero 100km/h of 4.9 seconds, and the four-wheel-drive version taking only 3.9 seconds. They both have a battery capacity of 80kWh, supporting a range of 710km, and the ultra-fast charging technology allows the vehicle to charge from 10%-80% in just 15 minutes. The vehicle is equipped with ADiGO PILOT 4.0 Smart Driving System, which can realize functions such as memory parking and remote control parking.
